THE ROLES OF RELIGIOUS STUDIES: A PANACEA FOR CURBING THE INSECURITY CHALLENGES TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

This study examined the relationship between the roles of religious studies: a panacea for curbing the insecurity challenges to national development in Nigeria. In order to achieve the purpose of this study four purposes, four research questions were raise and four null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The sub-variables of the study which were awareness of religions advent, self-consciousness, self-regulation, and regard for human dignity in curbing of insecurity challenges and national development were reviewed under background of the study, the sample size consisted of 294 respondents representing the population of 1176 drawn using simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured closed ended questionnaire titled, Roles of Religious Studies Questionnaire (RRSQ) and Factor for Curbing Insecurity and National Development Questionnaire (FCINDQ). The reliability of the instruments were established by using the data from trial testing procedure which yielded .86, which showed that the instruments were reliable to be used in the study. Research questions and hypotheses were answered using PPMC (Pearson Product Moment Correlation) analyses at .05 level of significant. The findings of the study revealed that roles of religious studies such as awareness of religions advent, self-consciousness, self-regulation, and regard for human dignity enhance in curbing of insecurity challenges and national development in Nigeria. It was recommended among others that religious leaders should be endowed with utmost knowledge of the religious norms and ethics scripted in the religious books, as they would able to guide their fellow members ethically through précised teaching and guidance, as this would help in directing the behaviour and attitude of the adherence.
